Volunteer with Shu Ren

Parent volunteers are the life blood of Shu Ren!

In fact, there is no "Shu Ren" without supporters to drive the programs and services we provide. There are a variety of ways for you to participate and support students in the Mandarin Immersion Program. Let's work together to bring your ideas to life to strengthen the Mandarin Immersion Program's community and providing cultural enrichment for all students at Woodstock, Hosford and Cleveland schools.

All MIP families are asked to pledge 15 hours of volunteer service with Shu Ren each year per student as part of our personal commitment to our students' education. If you are interested in participating in direct support of your student's Mandarin education, contact us directly at theboard@shurenofportland.org

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Events Committee Members

Looking for new members of our Shu Ren Events Committee. This committee meets 4 times a year to discuss and plan annual events such as the Dumpling Festival, fundraisers and any community events sought by the families in the MIP. Each member of the Events Committee gains an extra percentage of Shu Ren fundraising income to their student's class fund to support their student's trip to China (CRR).

Some of the areas that could be supported better in our MIP community through Shu Ren include:

  • Advocacy Committee (tracking PPS district and statewide changes to MIP)
  • Scholarship Program Oversight
  • Website and Online Sales Management
  • Events Committee Manger
  • Summer “Welcoming” Committee for new MIP families
  • Merchandise (Zodiac T-shirts, Mandarin learning materials)
  • Homework Help (English and/or Mandarin)
  • Community Outreach (especially Chinese community)
  • Parent Workshop Presentations (Helping the Mandarin Learner, Technology Resources)
  • Host Family Program – for visiting teachers and students

Do you see something you could do, or are we missing something you would do? Tell us about it! theboard@shurenofportland.org

Volunteer Background Checks 志愿者背景调查:

Portland Public Schools take every precaution to ensure the safety of children. All school volunteers or chaperons must complete a background check and have it renewed every three years. The school office maintains a list of approved volunteers and will gladly check to see if your application is current.
